The Charlotte Hornets joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) as an expansion team ahead of the 1988-1989 season. Like many expansion teams, Charlotte’s early seasons were defined by inconsistency. The team had a 96-232 record over four years before going 44-38 during the 1992-1993 season, the franchise’s first with a winning record. Before long, the team had joined the ranks of Eastern Conference teams competing for a spot in the playoffs.
The Hornets experienced their most prolonged period of success between 1994 and 1998. Led by a one-two scoring punch of Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson, the Hornets reached the 50 win threshold for the first time. However, Charlotte was upset in the first round of the playoffs by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. After a disappointing 41-41 record in the 1995-1996 season, the Hornets returned to form and set a new franchise record with 54 regular season wins.
Despite the new wins record, the 1995-1996 Hornets again fell in the opening round of the post season, this time to the New York Knicks. Rather than taking a step backward, Charlotte exceeded expectations and won 51 games the following year. The 1998 NBA Playoffs saw the Hornets advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the second time in franchise history following a 3-1 elimination of the Atlanta Hawks. Jordan and the Chicago Bulls once again stood in Charlotte’s way, however, eliminating the team in five games.
The Hornets returned to the second round of the playoffs in 2001 and 2002 on the strengths of a top five defense and the offensive prowess of veteran Jamal Mashburn and a young Baron Davis.
